Who is God?

The past few evenings I’ve gotten into the habit of sitting on my back porch for a couple of hours, watching the sun descend and the moon rise, and just soaking in Jesus’ presence. I find that in these moments where I am one on one with the King, and I am forced to shut off all outside influences, I become highly inspired. I was doing a devotional this week (one of the plans on the You Version app! They have the greatest devotionals.) and the author posed the question “who is God to you?” And it got me thinking, who is God in my life? Who is he to me? I decided I needed to find out.

Sitting on my back porch, watching the waning moon rise, I pulled out my journal and at the top of the page I titled it Who is God?. The next page of my journal I titled Who am I?. In my prayer and reading of the word many things came to me for that first question, and the more things I filled in under God’s section, the more I was able to fill in under MY section. Then it hit me, the only way for me to truly know myself, is if I first know my Heavenly Father. It is easy for us to go through our days with a skewed mindset and a false view of ourselves. Trust me I am just as guilty of this as anyone else! Sometimes we forget that we are beloved children of the King and instead focus on the fact that we are bad at algebra or clumsy or single or acne prone or frustrated. Any combination of these things and others can cause us to go about our day with the mindset that we are not enough, forgetting that we are made in the image of Christ! We are fearfully and wonderfully made, and the greater revelation we get of who our God is, the greater revelation we will get of who we are! So, who is God to me?

  1. My Father
  2. My provider
  3. My protector
  4. The giver of grace, mercy, forgiveness, joy, peace, etc.
  5. My hope
  6. My salvation
  7. My King
  8. The potter
  9. My healer
  10. My confidant
  11. My soul mate/the love of my life
  12. My best friend
  13. Love

Here are a few verses that Jesus laid on my heart this week, verses that reinforce just who my God is!

Psalm 63: 1-3 You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is not water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better then life, my lips will glorify you.

Psalm 143:8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. Rescue me from my enemies Lord, for I hide myself in you.

Jeremiah 18:6 He said “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so you are in my hand, Israel”.

Jeremiah 32: 17 Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

Once we take hold of the revelation of who Christ is, and actively apply it to our lives, we are able to take off the identity we have forced on ourselves and put on the identity that Jesus made for us! We have a set identify in Him that remains the same on the days that we are resting in His arms AND the days where it feels as though He is no where in sight. And the cool thing is, He didn’t just leave us to guess what this identity is! He wrote it in His word! So, who am I?

  1. Beloved
  2. A treasured possession of God
  3. Made new
  4. Daughter of the King
  5. Forgiven
  6. Redeemed
  7. Beautiful
  8. Whole
  9. Heir
  10. Chosen
  11. Protected

Deuteronomy 7:6 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.

Deuteronomy 33:12 Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old is gone, the new is here.

Romans 8:17 Now, if we are children, then we are heirs- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Spend time dwelling on these verses, and soon you will begin to see yourself through the eyes of the God who created you, no longer through eyes that try to paint you as tainted!
All my love & God bless you,
